Humane Charity Seal of Approval Dear Letters Editor: A recent poll by Opinion Research Corporation International asked 1,001 adults how they prefer their charitable donations be utilized. A majority said they would be more likely to donate to a health charity that does not fund animal experiments. Previously, there was no way to easily identify “cruelty-free” charities, so the Council on Humane Giving, a coalition of physician and animal protection organizations, developed the Humane Charity Seal of Approval. It assures that charitable dollars are not spent on research using animals. Many caring individuals, hoping to make a difference, participate in local walks or other benefits to fund research into cures for our most debilitating diseases. Sadly, many of the funds raised during these events go to wasteful animal experiments that will never help sick people. Animal systems are notoriously bad predictors of human diseases and can lead scientists in the wrong direction completely. When charities make the commitment to fund alternatives, like in vitro, epidemiological, or clinical research, they should be rewarded. I urge all charitable readers to choose from the list of organizations at www.HumaneSeal.org. They will find health charities committed to promoting human health through patient services, education, and vital research without the use of animals. Sincerely,
