HUMANE CHARITY SPOTLIGHTPatient Advocate FoundationDealing with a debilitating or life-threatening illness can be overwhelming, and problems with access to health care, medical debt, and employment only add to the stress of poor health. Since 1996, the Virginia-based Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) has been providing effective mediation and arbitration services to remove these obstacles and allow people to receive vital medical treatment. PAF’s case management program matches patients with professionals who help them navigate any illness-related issues with insurers, employers, or creditors. For example, last year, PAF helped a 20-year-old cancer patient receive coverage and treatment after he lost access to care when he could not remain a full-time student. In certain cases where patients cannot afford prescriptions or treatment, PAF also provides financial assistance in the form of co-pay relief. In addition to providing direct relief to patients, PAF offers a wealth of resources about health care access, financial aid, disease-specific information, and many other topics on its website. These helpful guides clarify the insurance process and point patients toward further sources of aid. In 2010, PAF served nearly 83,000 patients across the United States, and that number keeps rising.
